Meg Mainland

Cystic Fibrosis Parent

I was born and raised in Boyne City, MI and now live in Petoskey with my husband of 17 1/2 years, Ken and our two sons Corbin(16) & Kurtis(14) who is our Cystic Fibrosis Avenger.  Our daughter, Mackenzie, is 24 years old and lives in Florida due to the fact she doesn’t like cold weather. I graduated from Boyne City High School in 1994, from North Central Michigan College in 1997, and from Central Michigan University in Dec. 1999 with a Bachelors in Early Childhood Education. Ken and I have owned Hilltop Preschool & Child Care for the past 17 years, which has been in operation for the past 47 years.  I became a swim instructor for infants through adolescence 15 years ago and just stopped teaching due to busy schedules last year.  But I still do private lessons when needed.  I have been certified as an American Heart Association CPR/First Aid/AED Instructor for the past 13 years and I enjoy teaching others how to help save a life. Ken and I volunteer in our community in many ways and we have taught our children to also do for others more then they do for you.

Our son Kurtis was born without any indication that CF would be in our future.  He was 8 months old when the diagnosis was given.  When we received the call “we are 99% positive Kurtis has CF please come back down next week for a follow up appointment,” that could have rocked our world, but was actually a relief to us.  We had an answer for his symptoms and could now start working on getting him better with the help of the pediatric pulmonology department.

Our family is strong in our faith, and we know God blessed us with Kurtis for many wonderful reasons and for that we are truly thankful!   He may have CF, but CF doesn’t have him!
